marie-geneviève-joséphine nicaise-lacroix, born in paris on may 18, 1787, was the daughter of jean-pierre nicaise, known as lacroix, civil servant at the ministry of justice, in paris, and the granddaughter of pierre nicaise, employed on the king's farms, in arzillières, in champagne. Her older sister, anne-nicole-adélaïde, had married in 1809 a scholar, françois-joseph-stanislas maizony de lauréal, who in 1812 served as chief clerk of the imperial court in rome. Josephine nicaise-lacroix lived with her sister in rome. She was then engaged to the architect françois mazois, a friend of ingres. Following the definitive breakdown of their engagement, for reasons unknown, she remained single. After the fall of the empire, joséphine nicaise-lacroix followed her sister adélaïde and her husband stanislas de lauréal to france and died in paris in 1865, at the age of seventy-eight. In 1813, jean-dominique ingres married, in rome, marie-madeleine chapelle, first cousin of joséphine nicaise-lacroix. Historical commentary:
