Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1944-09-21) letter no. 285 (1944-09-28) next letter (1944-10-02) card card - rotated text blankenburg, september 28, 1944. My beloved mum! your kind words made me very happy, as always, but your two pieces of sad news hit me hard. I can hardly grasp or believe it. First my old friend pegi and now mr tschirtner. How cruel fate is! it always takes the best. I can imagine how hard this has hit pegi's wife with their little one, and mrs tschirtner karl and the girls. I will of course write to them and offer them as much comfort as i can, but only time can help and heal - you know that best yourself. Your newspaper came out today, it is shocking to see the victims on the last page, if only this misery would finally end. Hopefully things won't get any worse in our vienna. You see, my mother, what happened to pegi, who would have ever thought that he had been lucky. If it is meant for you, you cannot escape your fate. The only strange thing is that here too, death took the lives of two friends in quick succession, just like with buwi and mundl. We will always remember them with honor and hope from the bottom of our hearts that their sacrifice was not in vain. Date: 28 September 1944.
