The painting presents the rear view of the old amsterdam exchange - built by hendrick de keyser (1608-11) and torn down in the 19th century. Deviating from the actual topography and ignoring the canal that ran behind the building, van der heyden combines it with the rear of a patrician mansion and a shingled, medieval-looking cottage. These two building create a highly picturesque and almost rural ensemble of rear courtyards. A true mood painter, van der heyden is content to suppress topographical accuracy in favour of a lasting impression of the character of a dutch city. Object Type: painting. Genre: landscape painting.
