Caption: one of the demands made by governor maxwell to the ashanti king was that the latter should make his submission in accordance with native custom. Prempeh was ordered to remove his crown and his sandals, and to come forward with the queen mother to perform the act of humiliation. Arrived at the platform on which mr. Maxwell, sir francis scott, and colonel kempster were seated, they bent down and clasped the legs of the governor in token of submission.
