From the auction notes: "the following story is told about the present painting and the würzburg white stag. Christian ix's son-in-law, czar alexander ii of russia, who was married to princess dagmar, took part in the hunt in the zoo, although he was a poor marksman. When the hunt was called off and the prey put on parade, alexander ii had no game killed, and thus nothing to show. Resolutely he shot christian ix's favorite white stag, the depicted tame würzburg deer, which used to come to the king and eat from his hand. When the king heard the news, he threw his small silver-knobbed cane into the painting, causing a gash - the painting's upper clouds are the result of the restoration. The king ordered the painting taken down and removed, and he never saw it again. ". Object Type: painting. Date: 1889. Dimensions: height: 158 cm (62.2 in); width: 212 cm (83.4 in).
