The work represents the esquilache mutiny, which occurred in madrid in 1766 during the reign of charles iii of spain. The historical episode corresponds to a popular revolt in madrid in 1766: following what was ordered on the side of capes and hats, some tailors arranged these garments so that they were not long capes and flat hats, but short capes and three-cornered hats. An affected person seems to resist, and is restrained by a clergyman (the jesuits were accused of having instigated the riot). A bailiff presides over the scene with an authoritarian gesture. Object Type: painting. Date: 1864. Dimensions: height: 73 cm (28.7 in); width: 110 cm (43.3 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Museo del Prado. Monsó Esquilache
