The gubbio workshops were known for their excellence in the luster technique, and the ruby-colored luster on this plate, and other brightly colored luster glazes, were their specialties. Plates from nearby centers of maiolica production were often sent here to be lustered. Such specialization among the workshops was common during the first part of the 16th century.
