Dermot mac murrough - king of uí cheinnsealaig and king of laigin (leinster) - the man who invited the normans to ireland. It is believed that this is true representation of dermot, taken from life. Source: w. R. Wilde (d. 1876), "a descriptive catalogue of the antiquities in the museum of the royal irish academy", vol. 1 (dublin & london, 1863), p. 310. This is a wood engraving of an illustration that appeared in a manuscript of one of gerald de barry's works. [gerald de barry is also called giraldus cambrensis or gerald of wales]. The original is in colour.
