According to vignau, the galley flies the flag of the spanish habsburgs with the burgundian st. Andrew's cross, and the other ship carries the prince's flag and the flag with the dutch lion. Shots are fired from the bow, other ships approach in the background. Adam willaerts (1577-1664), from an antwerp family, lived and worked as a painter in utrecht since around 1602. In 1611 he and moreelse founded the st. Luke's guild, of which he was dean several times. He focused on painting city, sea and beach views. (source: digital collections leiden university library).
