A monet-loving prime minister who passed away eight years ago today
prime minister bülent ecevit was in paris with deputy prime minister necmettin erbakan and minister of national defense hasan esat işık to attend the funeral of french president pompidou in april 1974. After the ceremony, they went to the town of giverny, where monet's gardens are located. Giverny mayor bernard berche, who is also a farmer, and monsieur blain and jean-marie toulgouat, the gardeners who maintain the gardens, accompanied the delegation. It is said that they were very embarrassed in front of this elegant prime minister, who came from turkey and spoke perfect english, because of the neglect of the gardens. Monet's house and gardens, which were repaired and opened to the public in the late 1970s, host approximately one million visitors a year. It is estimated that the photographs were taken by gülgün üstündağ.
