Plate 7. The louvre in paris: elevation of the principal facade facing saint-germain l'auxerrois. From architecture françoise, tome 4, livre 6. For blondel's discussion of this plate (in french), see p. 40 of tome 4 (at gallica). The engraving shows statues and decorations that were planned but not executed. The pedimented semicircular niches for statues along the recessed walls behind the arrays of coupled columns to either side of the central avant-corps were replaced with windows in 1807 after the louvre was transformed into a public museum. Decoration of the facade (to designs differing from those shown here) was carried out by lemot and cartellier in 1808–1810. Bresc-bautier, geneviève (1995). The louvre: an architectural history. New york: the vendome press. Isbn 9780865659636. Date: 1667–1674 (design and construction)1756 (publication of the plate in Blondel's Architecture françoise).
