Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "--shut up, shouted topinard in a formidable voice, or i'll knock! -- you always have to tell them that, he added in a low voice to schmucke. -- here, my little one, said the porter to the usherette, here is mr. Schmucke, the friend of this poor mr. Pons, he doesn't know where to go, and he would like to come to our house; in vain did i warn him that we were not flamboyant, that we were on the sixth floor, that we only had a loft to offer him, he insisted on it, schmucke had sat down on a chair that the woman had moved for him, and the children, completely taken aback by the arrival of a stranger, had gathered in a group to engage in this in-depth, silent and soon-to-be-finished examination, which distinguishes childhood, accustomed like dogs. To sniff rather than judge. Schmucke began to look at this pretty group where there was a little girl, aged five, the one who blew the trumpet and who had such magnificent blond hair.
