1637 drawing by henry lilly (d. 1638), rouge dragon pursuivant, of stained glass depiction in stoke-by-nayland church in suffolk, of sir john howard iii (d. 1436) with his second wife alice tendring, daughter and heiress of sir william tendring of tendring in essex (grandparents of w:john howard, 1st duke of norfolk (c. 1425-1485)). Arms: gules, a bend between six cross-crosslets fitchy argent (howard (unaugmented, pre-1513)) impaling azure, a fess between two chevrons argent (tendring) (burke, sir bernard, the general armory, london, 1884, p. 1002 "tendering").
