The hague, mauritshuis, building survey of house and garden, condition from 1636, site plan 9. 1. 1. 2 - the hague, mauritshuis, building survey of house and garden, condition from 1636, site plan inventory no. : gs 12961 description: the hague, mauritshuis, building survey of house and garden, condition from 1636, site plan artist: maurits post (1645 - 1677), draftsman, questionable date: 1636 (after) geographical reference: the hague technique: graphite, pen in black and brown, green and yellow wash support: paper watermark: lily coat of arms with crown, below "wr" in ligature (slightly blurred) dimensions: 45. 5 x 59 cm with flap (sheet size) scale: numbered scale with unit of measurement "voeten wiltmaet" inscriptions: top right: "carte dewelk aenweijst de situatie van het gebouwe van / sijn gen: graef maurits van nassau beniffens de stall. / en thuijn in s'gravenhage (underneath crossed out "scharben haage") int jaer anno 1636" (pen in black) in the illustration: further labels and explanation of the legend (pen in black) catalogue text: the relatively schematic plan, trimmed on several sides, from the former codex fol. A 37 (cf. The introductory text "places in the netherlands, unknown places") shows the mauritshuis and the associated garden plot in its position in relation to the surrounding buildings, plots of land, streets and the so-called "vijver" ditch. Scratches and punctures in the paper suggest that it is a copy. The detailed caption, which among other things explains that the plan describes the local conditions in 1636 ("carte dewelk aenweijst de situatie van het gebouwe van / sijn gen: graef maurits van nassau beniffens de stall. / en thuijn in s'gravenhage (underneath crossed out "scharben haage") int jaer anno 1636"), can be attributed to maurits post based on handwriting comparisons. It is possible that it is a copy of a plan from 1636 - not necessarily made by him himself - which post needed in connection with his garden plan from 1668 (gs 12912), which is also in the former codex a 37. Another floor plan in the state it was in 1636 (gs 12891) also belongs in this context. The mauritshuis with its walled courtyard and gate is shown in the ground floor plan. On one side of the gate is the castellan's apartment, on the other a staircase leads to the tunnel under the street, which, on the instructions of the prince, was intended to ensure direct access to the garden. The garden was also shielded from the street by an elongated building. Two rectangular parterres, each with four compartments, are separated by a triangular green area where the ground bends. The irregularly distributed trees drawn on the edges of the garden were old stock that johann moritz had to leave standing at first because a colony of herons was nesting in them. The legend also notes houses for various animals under the letter h, but like the legend of the letters ip, they have obviously been cut off at the bottom of the drawing. Above the mauritshuis, the corresponding stables mentioned in the title are listed in a specially glued-on flap. Status: september 2004 [uh]. Date: 1636.
