iconographic description:
two young women wearing ribboned caps and the one on the right draped in a large shawl, are accompanied by a man, walking behind them and holding an umbrella above their heads. He has a large file in a portfolio under his right arm. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "recently, while passing rue de rivoli on his way to the bois de boulogne, our baron saw baroness d'aldrigger under the arcades. The little old woman had a green greatcoat lined with pink, a flowered dress, a mantilla, in short she was always and more than ever a shepherdess of the alps, because she did not understood more the causes of her misfortune than the causes of her opulence. She relied on poor malvina, model of heroic devotion, who seemed to be the old mother, while the baroness seemed to be the young girl and wirth followed them with an umbrella in her hand.
