Chinese: Zhi Gong Picture Scroll, Qiu Ying

Chinese: Zhi Gong Picture Scroll, Qiu Ying

This "zhi gong tu" volume was drawn by qiu ying in the ming dynasty. The scroll depicts scenes of border peoples coming to beijing to pay tribute. It begins with the seal script "all barbarians pay tribute" in xu chu's seal script, and then depicts eleven tribute teams in sequence: the lord of the eighteen cave of jiuxi, han'er, bohai, khitan, kunlun, queen's kingdom, sanfoqi, tubo, annanhe, xixia, and korea. At the end of the volume are postscripts by wen zhengming, zhang daqian, wu hufan and zhang naiyan. This volume is now in the collection of the palace museum in beijing. The scene in the picture is spectacular, with rolling hills, undulating hills, shaded pines and cypresses, fluttering wisterias, floating clouds, flowing springs, exotic objects, and all kinds of colors, which are dizzying for the eyes. The outline of the characters, the depiction of the pommel and the horse, the arrangement of trees and rocks, and the embellishment of clouds and water are either simple and ancient in brushwork, or delicate in depiction; the colors are mainly green, with occasional multicolored touches, which are ancient and gorgeous, and can be called qiu ying's exquisite work. The theme of "tribute pictures" has existed since ancient times. It is a documentary picture depicting the image of ethnic minorities in china or tribute envoys from foreign countries. Half of these images are based on actual scenes from various foreign lands at that time, and half follow the content of various tribute drawings in the past dynasties, incorporating the knowledge, memory and imagination left in history into seemingly realistic paintings. Zhigong, which means dutiful tribute, refers to an activity in ancient times in which leaders of various countries and domestic ethnic minorities dutifully paid tribute to the emperor of the central plains to express submission or alliance. Introducing the seal script of xu chu, "zhu yi zhi gong", with "xu" and "chu" zhu wen's seal, coupled with zhu wen's square seal, "xu's yuanfu" zhu wen's square seal. Object Type: painting. Date: Mid Ming Dynasty (1542 A.D.-1552 A.D.). Dimensions: height: 29.5 cm (11.6 in) ; width: 580.3 cm (19 ft). Collection: The Palace Museum. 职贡图卷 - 明代 - 北京故宫博物院藏
