This is plate 28 from william hodges' 'select views in india'. Hodges travelled past the dutch settlement at chinsura during his 1781/82 tour of bengal. Located on the river ganges, chinsura had been settled by the dutch in the previous century. Hodges wrote: "this is the residence of the dutch governor and his council. There is a fort and within that the factories of the dutch east-india company in this part of india. Chiunsura is remarkable for the pleasantness of its situation and its healthiness. ".
