«with this painting, exhibited in venice in 1853, the artist addressed for the first time the historical subject of literary inspiration, dear to romantic culture. The theme, taken from the short poem full of medieval suggestions by bartolomeo sestini which was so successful in the early nineteenth century, focuses on an episode neglected by painters, that of pia's sad journey to her prison in the maremma. The figures of the two travellers, meticulously described, stand out against the landscape of the tuscan coast, made dark and melancholic by the cloudy day in pathetic harmony with the state of mind of the desolate young bride. Even the animals reflect the feelings of the protagonists, the one fiery and impetuous, the pia submissive and at pace. » (see source, p. 232). Object Type: painting. Date: 1853.
