iconographic description:
an imposing man in hunter's clothing (rifle, bag and powder horn, as well as two dogs at his feet) eagerly grabs the hands of a bourgeois dressed all in white who, surprised, takes a step back. The latter's wife, worried, stands behind him. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "--where the hell are we? said the big hunter, wiping his forehead and leaning against a tree in the field, almost in front of his companion; because he no longer felt the strength to jump the wide ditch that separated him. --and it's me that you're asking, replied the hunter lying in the tall grass, laughing yellows which crowned the embankment. He threw the end of his cigar into the ditch, exclaiming: - i swear by saint hubert that i will never again be caught venturing into an unknown country with a magistrate, even if he is like you, my dear d'albon, an old college friend!
