Hanging Or Portière (England or United States), 1875–1900, Walter Crane, 1875–1900

Hanging or portière in two shades of green and ochre. A deep border at the bottom is made up of stalks of wheat, with roundels containing a winged male figure flanked by two horses. The side borders contain draped female figues with wings, separated by abstracted pomegranate motifs. The center field has horizontal bands of spirals resembling waves, sunburst patterns, and rows of roundels containing a draped female figure with an oar in a boat with sails. Weave is designed to imitate tapestry. Date: 1875–1900. Dimensions: H x W: 249 × 132 cm (8 ft. 2 1/16 in. × 51 15/16 in.). Medium: linen, wool. Collection: Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
