The experts at bruun rasmussen described this painting as flere sejlskibe ud for skagen nye fyr (some sailing ships off the new lighthouse of skagen). But there is more to the story. This is a ship portrait and two of the sailing ships are actually the same vessel at two different angles. The signal flags nkdw will inform you that this is the danish brig mercurius, and that vessel was in fact a former naval brig of denmark, launched at orlogsværftet in 1837 and entering service in 1839. In 1862 the danish navy sold the mercurius to private owners and it was adapted as a merchant ship. In 1883 ownership passed to briggen mercurius rhederi a/s, administered by j. H. Schmidt, copenhagen (the red flag with an s on the mainmast). Master in 1885 was h. P. Falk of ribe. The old brig was sold in 1887 and broken up. Source: jmarcussen. Dk (in danish).
