on a dirt road various characters with human silhouettes and animal heads parade. On the right, two ox-headed food carriers bend under the weight of a large bag and boxes and packages. In the center, two donkey-men struggle to carry an armchair containing an ox-man. On the left, a man with the head of a donkey holds in his arms two young children and a basket while following him is a couple made up of a woman of the people with the head of a fish and a man whose face is hidden by his hat. Excerpt from métamorphoses du jour (published by gustave havard libraire, paris, 1854): "as soon as there were two men on earth, one of the two oppressed the other and made him his beast of burden. It was only a long time later that certain ingenious individuals thought that from time to time one could advantageously add to the strength of man that of various robust animals.
