iconographic description:
observations: cf. Explanation of pl. P. 1217 of number 153; description, analysis: police officers went to a family's home to carry out in-depth searches. The scene probably takes place in the middle of the night, judging by the outfit of the inhabitants, in the center, in dressing gowns, shirts and night caps. The woman looks worried and distressed and holds her child by the hand while holding her nightgown tightly to her chest. An old man chats with a policeman, certainly the inspector. His hands show incomprehension at the scene. In the center of the composition, a man (certainly the woman's husband) observes the scene. He appears to have dressed hastily to greet the police. The latter, numerous, search every corner of the home in search of evidence of the plot: one takes down a painting, others carefully look at tools. Another, on his knees, inspects the edge of a closed letter. Drawers have been taken out of furniture and their contents are carefully inspected. Two men are busy searching the bed, while another inspects the chamber pot. The pl. Wants to show the absurdity of the investigations, which leads the police to look for clues even in the most improbable places. Another man watches from the canopy of the bed. Finally, in the background, another police officer searches the kitchen cupboards. The title of the pl. Shows the absurdity of the situation, which causes a family to wake up in the middle of the night to allow the police to look for evidence of a plot of which they do not even know the target. The pl. Thus denounces the repressive measures of the july government, absurd and inappropriate. She denounces the incessant hunt for culprits, particularly among republicans, since it seems that the inhabitants of this house are, if we judge by the shape of the woman's nightcap, quite close to that of a phrygian cap.
