Leaving the family (Hunt), William Holman Hunt, 1860

Illustration for the story "witches and witchcraft. " ellen's mother (holding the baby in this illustration) believes that a witch has cast the evil eye on ellen (in the chair inside), blaming this for quarrels between ellen and her husband jack. Jack, who believes in witchcraft also and thus believes that he and ellen are fated to never reconcile, has packed his belongings and is hitting the road although ellen's mother tries to hold him back.
