Sommacampagna 1848, Felice Cerruti Bauduc, 1855

According to the museo del risorgimento in turin, where the painting is exhibited, the work refers to the clash of sommacampagna which occurred on 23 july 1848 immediately before the battle of custoza, as part of the first war of independence. Other scholars give a different interpretation of the subject of the painting (http://www. Rescollector. It/arte-e-antiquariato/quadri/olii/importante-dipinto-felice-cerruti-battaglia-pastrengo) who, instead, connect the painting to a secondary episode of the first war of independence, which took place in sommacampagna on 30 april 1848, on the occasion of the battle of pastrengo (the morning of the 30th the attack of pastrengo and bussolengo began. Radetzky tried to stop the piedmontese army by launching 3000 croats on sona and sommacampagna, but was repelled by the aosta brigade: the painting by cerruti bauduc refers to this specific episode). Date: 1855.
