Imaginary portrait of king ferdinand iv of castile (1285-1312). He was the son of king sancho iv of castile and queen maría de molina. During his minority, his upbringing and the custody of his person were entrusted to his mother, queen maría de molina, while his guardianship was entrusted to the infant enrique of castile the senator, son of ferdinand iii of castile. During his minority, and also during the rest of his reign, his mother sought to appease the nobility, confronted her son's enemies, and on several occasions prevented ferdinand iv from being dethroned. During his reign he had to face the insubordination of the nobility, led on numerous occasions by his uncle, the infante juan de castilla el de tarifa, and by juan núñez ii de lara, who were supported on some occasions by don juan manuel, grandson of fernando iii. Like his predecessors on the throne, ferdinand iv continued the enterprise of the reconquista and, although he failed in his attempt to conquer algeciras in 1309, he conquered the city of gibraltar that same year, and in 1312 the jaén municipality of alcaudete was conquered. During the cortes of valladolid in 1312, he promoted the reform of the administration of justice, and that of all areas of administration, while attempting to reinforce the authority of the crown to the detriment of noble authority. He died in jaén on september 7, 1312, at the age of twenty-six and was succeeded by his son, alfonso xi of castile. He was buried in the church of san hipólito in córdoba. Object Type: painting.
