In the foreground, faust and mephistopheles run down a short flight of steps in the street at night, fleeing the scene of the duel in which valentine, marguerite's (gretchen's) brother, was killed; faust replaces his sword in its scabbard while mephistopheles holds his own sword under one arm, and grasps his companion with the other, while turning to look back at valentine on the ground attended by three figures. 1827 lithograph.
