The monument of Philopappus in Athens in 1751, James Stuart

The monument of philopappοs in athens atop the hill of the muses (philopappou hill or λόφος φιλοπάππου) in 1751. On the left, james stuart, nicholas revett, james dawkins and robert wood are studying the monument, while a greek shepherd, leaning on the monument, stares with interest at them–his goats wandering around and on the monument. The smoking turkish janissary who escorts the british is preparing coffee, rather disinterested, having turned his back on both the british and the monument. On the right and at the distant horizon, the saronic gulf and part of aegina island. Date: 1751.
