Polyptych of the Paradise Convent, Gregório Lopes

Polyptych of the Paradise Convent, Gregório Lopes

This painting, as well as "santa luzia and santa ágata" (national museum of ancient art), come from the lisbon hermitage of paraíso. Two other paintings that are now in the posen museum, in poland ("santa apolônia and santa inês" and "santa catarina and santa bárbara"), with identical format and composition, were purchased in lisbon in 1844 by count atanazy raczynski, having belonged to the gallery of the marquis of penalva. Carl justi attributed this set to velascus and josé de figueiredo, alluding to posen's paintings, mentions the name of cristóvão de figueiredo. Luís reis-santos hypothesized that the four paintings constituted the predella of the "paraíso" altarpiece [national museum of ancient art] attributed to gregório lopes. Vítor serrão (in the catalog of the exhibition no tempo das feitorias) subscribes to reis-santos' opinion, integrating them into the work of gregório lopes. Object Type: polyptych, reredos, painting series. Genre: religious art. Medium: oil and oak wood. Depicted People: Saint Lucy, Agatha of Sicily, Margaret the Virgin, Mary Magdalene, Saint Apollonia, Agnes of Rome, Catherine of Alexandria, Saint Barbara. Collection: National Museum of Ancient Art. Santa Margarida e Santa Maria Madalena
