This volume of "ten thousand miles of the yangtze river" was painted by xia gui of the southern song dynasty. This picture scroll unfolds from right to left, from rough waves to calm waves. Either the two sides of the river bank are narrow, the mountains and rocks are steep, and the river is rushing rapidly; or the river is far away and the water is wide, surrounded by smoke and fog. People floated on the river, some bravely rushing through the rapids, and some leaning on the shore to load and unload cargo. There are villages, hotels, pavilions and temples on the shore. Pedestrians are hurrying on their way, and the whole area is full of interest. This volume is now in the collection of the national palace museum in taipei. This painting is attributed to xia gui of the southern song dynasty, but the figures on the trees and rocks are bold and skillful in their brushwork, and the rocks are chopping and rubbing with an axe, and the layers of shades are typical of the zhejiang style of the ming dynasty. It may have been painted by someone who imitated xia gui's painting style in the early ming dynasty. The first half of the scroll depicts close-ups of rocks, trees, and boats traveling on the river from an angle close to eye level, showing the steep and turbulent landscape of the three gorges of the yangtze river. The second half depicts activities on the river from an overhead and distant perspective, as well as the beautiful scenery seen along the way. Object Type: painting. Date: Southern Song Dynasty.
