Portrait of general mellinet
delaunay executed two portraits of general emile mellinet (1798-1894), one of which is kept at the dobrée museum. Mellinet had an exemplary career, leading brilliant actions in the spanish civil war (1822), in algeria (1840-1846), in crimea (1855), and in italy (1860). He became brigadier general in 1850 and division general in 1855, then senior commander of the national ranks of the seine (1863) before resigning in 1869. He received the grand cross of the legion of honor in 1859 and became a senator in 1865. Grand master of freemasonry of france (1865-1870), mellinet was also an informed collector. In his portrait, delaunay pays a powerful tribute to the extraordinary character of his model, his friend, hiding neither the scar received in sevastopol nor the military decorations. The work was bequeathed to the nantes museum by mellinet in 1894. His hometown dedicated a square to him upon his death decorated with a sculpture by gustave leblanc-barbedienne (1898). Object Type: painting. Date: 1887. Dimensions: height: 65 cm (25.5 in); width: 55 cm (21.6 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Nantes Museum of Arts.
