This is a portrait after a work by françois riss, depicting the duchesse de berry imprisoned following her unsuccessful rebellion in the vendée in 1832. The work is a symbol of legitimist ideology: aged by her treatment yet defiant, the duchesse holds a miniature of her son the duc de bordeaux, the legitimist heir to the throne of france. The original work was also circulated in a print by gaulon with the composition reversed; an example is held in the jeanvrot collection at the musée des beaux-arts of bordeaux. Object Type: painting.
