Description: view of the derde regulierspoort and the associated bridge in amsterdam, built in 1654-1655, seen from outside the city. Various figures along the quay and on the bridge. This stone gate replaced the earlier wooden second regulierspoort. After the fourth explanation and the construction of the utrechtsepoort (1664), this building lost its function as a city gate. From 1669 it would be used as a boterwaag. Part of a print series of amsterdam city gates. Manufacture. Manufacturer: printmaker: reinier nooms (mentioned on object), after own design by: reinier nooms (mentioned on object), publisher: dancker danckerts (mentioned on object), publisher: justus danckerts (possibly). Place of manufacture: amsterdam. Dating: 1655 - 1701. Material: paper technique: etching / drypoint / engraving (printing process). Dimensions: sheet: h 185 mm × w 309 mm explanation part of a print series consisting of a title print and seven prints of amsterdam city gates or only seven prints of amsterdam city gates. Three editions of this print series are known, published by cornelis danckerts (i), dancker danckerts and justus danckerts respectively. Three states are known of the title print: one stands for the letter on which the drypoint work is still clearly visible, one state on which dancker danckerts is listed as the publisher; and one where justus danckerts is listed as publisher. The series published by cornelis (i) danckerts may not have had a title print. Quite a few copies of each of the other prints have survived, but only one is known. Cornelis danckerts (i) is listed as publisher on four of these prints. No publisher is listed on two prints and dancker danckerts is listed as publisher on one print. It is possible that both dancker and justus included their names on the title print before their publication without updating the other prints. This would mean that the prints on which cornelis (i) is listed as publisher could also have been published later by his sons dancker and justus. And that the print on which danker is mentioned as publisher could also have been published by justus. The fact that the print of the derde regulierspoort (rp-p-ao-27-15-2 and current print) does contain the name of dancker danckerts - in a slightly different style - could be explained by the fact that this print was added to the series a little later, after the death of cornelis (i) in 1656. The series also contains a print of the second regulierspoort (rp-p-ao-27-4-2 and rp-p-ob-20. 579). This wooden gate was demolished in 1654 and replaced by the stone third regulierspoort, which was completed in 1655. Subject: what: city-gatebridgecanal (+ landscape with figures, staffage). Where.
