Hms 'indefatigable' exploding at the battle of jutland, 31 may 1916 inscribed by the artist 'indefatigable' , lower left. At the battle of jutland on 31 may 1916 the 'indefatigable' was hit by successive salvos of 11-inch shells from the german battle-cruiser 'von der tann' at 16. 02-16. 03 and blew up with the loss of 1017 officers and men. There were only two survivors. Whether this atmospheric drawing is based on eyewitness accounts or a photograph remains to be determined. [b. Date: 1916. Dimensions: 246 mm x 308 mm.
