Colonel of the geographical service phdr. Jiří čermák (* 1884 – 1955) was a geographer, cartographer and traveler. Author of mountaineering, legionary and geographical literature. From 1932, he served as deputy head of the military geographical institute (vzú) in prague. From march 1937 to february 1940, he was the commander of the military geographical institute, or geographical institute of the ministry of the interior (zúmv). In connection with the concealment of geodetic and cartographic material from the germans, he was suspended from command of the institute in early february 1940, arrested by the gestapo, imprisoned and brought before a german military court-martial. He was convicted for aiding and abetting and subsequently imprisoned (until the end of world war ii). The image dates from 1938 and is a cut from a photograph in which the president of the republic, dr. Edvard beneš, accompanied by the commander of the vzú (j. Čermák), introduces the new map materials processed at the vzú. The author of this photo is an unknown person. Date: 1938.
