The battle of nieuwpoort (battle of the dunes), 2 july 1600, part of the eighty years' war; the dutch army (including english and scottish mercenaries) led by maurice, prince of orange, at left, charging towards the spanish army led by archduke albert at right, including cavalry led by charles de longueval, comte de bucquoy, the battle taking place on the dunes; the town of nieuwpoort in lower left, the church of westende at right, the beach with its dunes above, the sea at top; captioned, numbered and lettered throughout the composition indicating different places, people and sections of both armies; two coat-of-arms flanked by lions in top centre; four cartouches containing neo-latin text in right corners; second state with address of hondius. C. 1601, later published by hondius in 1616 engraving with some etching, printed from two plates on two sheets of paper. Date: 1600-1601 (c.). Dimensions: Height: 895 mm; Width: 589 mm.
