genre scene. Interior scene: paris, boutique "aux arts reuniones / [. . . ] / for three brothers [. . . ] / [. . . ] décroteurs". Characters: on the left, three customers are seated on a wooden platform. One of them reads the newspaper while a shoe cleaner does some mending. A pot of shoe polish, a brush, scissors and thread are placed on the steps. An abbot, holding a newspaper, chats with a soldier while another employee takes care of the clergyman's shoes. Pairs of boots are placed on the side of the stage. Two framed drawings hang above them. An employee brushes the jacket of a customer standing in the center of the room, near whom a dog sits. Two men appear to be looking at something. A woman, in conversation with a soldier, stands behind a desk. Behind her, shelves hold objects. People walk past the store. Historical commentary:
