preparatory drawing for the 61st painting of the "historical tableaux of the french revolution", illustrating the national funeral of j. G. Simoneau, mayor of etampes, declared a martyr of economic freedom by the legislative assembly (assassinated for having refused to apply taxation on the market in the town of etampes). Organized by quatremère de quincy, the procession started from the main boulevards, passed in front of the madeleine (seen here under construction) to arrive at the champ-de-mars. Cf.
