Feldpost von Hans 1943-04-17 2, 17 April 1943

Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1943-04-16) letter no. 159 (1943-04-17) next letter (1943-04-21) east, april 17, 1943. My dear mum, as you can see from the paper and writing, your two packages have already arrived. Thank you very much for that, as i really needed both of them. The bakery, cigarettes and everything else is just wonderful. The thermometer and ink were still intact. As is always the case, the two packages arrived at just the most inopportune moment. I already wrote to you that i was coming back to the baggage train. As i was packing my things in the position and was glad that they were no longer there, the two packages arrived. I was of course very happy, but now what should i do with them? i packed everything in my blankets and set off. I had to walk 5-6 km with my "klimmpim" [austria: long, strenuous walk]. The platoon where i was a messenger didn't want to let me go and wanted me to come back very soon. I've been here since yesterday in a small town with a sergeant and am supposed to be trained as an accountant. The accountant in the company is responsible for pay, clothing and food accounting. It's not easy but if you pay attention you'll manage it. I also have 17 men to feed [which means i have to receive food from the battalion and then divide it up so that i don't miss out - you can imagine!]. Date: 17 April 1943.
