Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1942-10-24) letter no. 107 (1942-11-01) next letter (1942-11-04) russia, 1. 11. 42. My dear mama! today is already a week since i have been on the road. We are now near vitebsk and do not yet know where we are going. The transport is quite good, so one could bear it. We are in a freight car with 36 men, a small stove and enough coal. The food is plentiful and good. We look around the area. Sing a lot and play the harmonica. It is especially beautiful in the evenings. When the fire is burning, the candles are lit and then the songs of our beautiful homeland ring out. We lie [on wood wool and sleep a lot. ]. Date: 1 November 1942.
