Explanation of pl. P. 370; description, analysis: this is the "king's prize", a horse race involving the curtius (the king's horse, who is mounted on it), seeking to be level with the republican (ridden by a figure wearing the cockade), the napoleon just behind, and finally the last three, in the background, who have abandoned the race: the regent, henry v and the duchess of angoulême. It is a metaphor for the race for power between the different parties which clashed in 1830, which saw the triumph of republicanism and the establishment of the july monarchy. The spectators in the foreground, seen from behind, are mostly enthusiastic to see the republican win (some raise their arms, others lift their hats), except perhaps the king, motionless, who is also among the audience. He wears a hat bearing the tricolor cockade. Only the clothes are colorful and make it possible to clearly differentiate the political affiliation of each protagonist. Mode of acquisition: retrospective registration date of acquisition: 20–02–2013 institution: maison de balzac. Date: En 1831.
