Studies of heads and horses. These various sketches offer different facets of pauline auzou's work. In our drawing, the face in profile is characterized by a physiognomy reminiscent of ancient statues, combining with a few features a timeless hieraticism with a neoclassical idealization often used in this genre. On the other hand, the horse and the barely sketched male character, perhaps god or jupiter, also testify to this perpetual ambition which allowed her to persevere on a path that a woman should know how to conquer. The front study stands out from the whole by its individuality and the volume created by the work of shadows and highlights. The lowered gaze, the slightly tilted face and the bun forming a knot combine softness and elegance while demonstrating his ability to communicate a feeling only through a sketch. It could recall jean-baptiste santerre (1651 - 1717) and his reception piece painting, a suzanne bathing presented in 1704 (paris, louvre museum, inv 7836) and whose face shape is reminiscent of the one sketched by pauline auzou. On the back of our sheet, two sketches of horses echo the one found on the front. Object Type: drawing. Date: early 19th century. Dimensions: 60,5 x 50,1 cm.
