Awarded a third medal at the national exhibition of fine arts of 1887, the painting pays tribute to two of the heroes who achieved the most legendary glory in the fight of the people of madrid against the french troops during the war of independence. Thus, it illustrates the moment in which the guerrilla juan malasaña kills the french dragon that has just murdered his daughter, the embroiderer manuela malasaña, who supplied her father with rifle cartridges to fight the french troops from their home, during the assault on the monteleón park. This painting is probably the best testimony of the most characteristic facet of the production of eugenio álvarez dumont, who, together with his brother césar, became true specialists in painting war and military scenes and very particularly of themes related to the war of independence.
