This miniature portrait of a south german prince (he wears a red sash of bavarian st. Hubertus-order; see our image nr. 10) turned out to be that of johann wilhelm, elector palatine (1658-1716; see our images nr. 7-9). George asam (1649 rott on inn - 1711 sulzbach in upper pfalz) studied under the municher court painter nikolaus prugger and married the teacher's daughter maria theresia. From 1681 he worked in benediktbeuern and later in italy (surely in venice, propably in rome). From 1688 to 1694 he was in tegernsee, then in munich and from 1700 in upper pfalz. He was one of the most important fresco painters in germany with a strong influence of tizian, tintoretto, veronese and rubens. Date: between 1690 and 1700.
