Iconographic description: see explanation of pl. P. 734. Additional explanation p. 758 of number 95. Power is represented by the figure of louis-philippe, seen from behind, as a grinder of characters, miniature figures of ministers. The one he is grinding for epaulettes, gold coins and decorations seems to be the elder dupin. The others, already put to the grindstone, lie on the ground: soult under the left knee of the king, argout, who rests his head on soult's body, lobau (with a clyster syringe standing next to him) and barthe, located under the bench. The other figures on the ground are more difficult to identify (perhaps montalivet, whose back rests on d'argout's legs?). In the background, ministers, among whom we recognize athalin on the left, descend the steps of the palais bourbon and carry boxes filled with other small figures (military, deputies) that those in power can pass through the grindstone. The crank allowing the operation of the millstone is operated by a smiling character, wearing a cap whose tip is equipped with feathers and bells: undoubtedly this is the personification of the newspaper "la caricature", in the guise of charles philipon. The pl. Denounces the avidity with which ministers are inclined to receive honorary distinctions, an avidity that is well understood by the king who takes advantage of this weakness. The pl. Presents the ministers as little puppets without will that the king manipulates without difficulty by promising them privileges. Person / character represented: soult, nicolas-jean de dieu; louis-philippe i, king of the french; barthe, felix; mouton, georges, count of lobau; argout, antoine maurice apollinaire d', baron mode of acquisition: retrospective registration date of acquisition: 20–02–2013 institution: maison de balzac. Date: En 1832.
