Johann gottfried herder (1744-1803). Oil painting by anton graff, 1785. Highly esteemed by goethe since strasbourg, herder, then court preacher in bückeburg, was appointed general superintendent in weimar by carl august on goethe's advice, where he arrived on october 2, 1776. Although he was close to the duchesses and supported by goethe as much as he could, this great man did not find a life that satisfied him. Through his own fault, he fell into ostracism, particularly in the last decade of his life, and his relationship with goethe became sour. Date: 1785.
