Carl friedrich fromman (1765-1837) bookseller in jena. Chalk drawing by j. Schmeller. Goethe's connection with the family of the publisher and printer frommann, who had moved from züllichau to jena in 1798, began as a business relationship and became very friendly, especially in 1806 and 1807. The strong affection of the sixty-year-old poet for frommann's foster daughter gave the social hours in the winter of 1807 a special color, inspired the poet to compete in a sonnet competition with zacharias werner, and helped to draw ottilie from "elective affinities" and perhaps "pandora".
