After the turn of the century, liebermann's work focused on portrait painting. Self-portraits, mostly as a painter, were also only now being created in considerable numbers. There was a long tradition of portraying himself as a painter, which could be varied. In the less numerous neutral self-portraits, liebermann embodies the educated upper middle class: almost always in a three-piece suit, with a bow tie or tie of his choice, tie pin, white handkerchief in the breast pocket, watch chain. In terms of gestures and posture, these pictures often follow role models that were also developed in contemporary photography after 1900. In painting and photography, the well-groomed appearance that maintains distance is almost always combined with a casual posture that further underlines the self-confidence portrayed.
