The Boy Martyr, Frederick Sandys, late 1862

This image illustrated a poem of the same title, by walter thornbury, in which a young christian martyr living in the time of nero successfully defeats a powerful opponent. Because the christian refuses to relinquish his faith, emperor nero orders the lions to be released into the arena. The christian is killed but goes to paradise.
