iconographic description:
a young man sits on a chair, he wears an elegant dressing gown. He holds a knife (a letter opener?) in one hand and leans on a desk with the other. Beside him, a young woman stands, wringing her hands anxiously. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the morals of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "madame marneffe also presented to crevel research that he did not suspect, because neither josépha nor héloïse had loved him; while madame marneffe considered it necessary to deceive this man in whom she saw an eternal treasure. The deceptions of venal love are more charming than reality. Love true includes quarrels of sparrows where we hurt each other to the quick; but the quarrel for fun is, on the contrary, a caress given to the self-esteem of the dupe. Thus, the rarity of the interviews kept crevel's desire in a state of passion. [excerpt from la cousine bette, by honoré de balzac]
